Was created as a lossless image format, although it can also be lossy. There are several types of files you can use: PNG produces higher quality images, but also has a larger file size. To get a fluid image in Chrome, we need to tell the illustration to always fill the width of its container. ![]() The quality of the lenses seems pretty decent although I only have the Dive to compare them to.Ĭomfort is a bit of an issue. The mechanism to adjust the IPD is a bit loose on mine but I should be able to fix that with a bit of Bluetack. I’m not sure what the minimum is but I know I have an IPD of 63mm and I have to adjust them about 3mm short of their maximum throw. ![]() IPD can be adjusted on the device as well. The lenses are fully adjustable and I was able to set them up to overcome my nearsightedness without having to wear glasses or contacts. I can’t imagine that a 7” phone/tablet with any sort of bezel at all would fit in here. While the description of the device on the dx.com website claims that it will hold phones up to 7”, I think my phone is about the biggest device you’d want to put in it. I would have preferred some sort of spring loaded mechanism. My phone is held in place surprisingly securely but I’m not sure how long the “ratcheting” mechanism which clamps down on the phone will hold up to repeated adjusting. Another issue is that the phone’s screen is completely enclosed within the HMD leaving you with no access to the touch screen (I used a keyboard and mouse sharing application called ShareKMS to get around this). My phone fits perfectly into the device, although the power and volume controls are completely obstructed. The lenses are much bigger too and, while I think the FOV is about the same, any distortion around the periphery is greatly reduced over the Dive. My first impression of the ColorCross HMD was that it was much sturdier than I had anticipated. A fact which I was aware of before purchasing but I was able to make some minor modifications to get it to work. One of the issues was that it was too small for my phone. I purchased the Durovis Dive a couple of weeks back and, while it was a neat first foray into the world of HMD’s, I wanted something better. In both devices, I am using my Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Negative values for the skewness indicate data that are skewed left and positive values for the skewness indicate data that are skewed right. The skewness for a normal distribution is zero, and any symmetric data should have skewness near zero. While a variance can never be a negative number, the measure of skewness can and this is how we determine if the data are skewed right of left. The variance measures the squared differences of the data from the mean and skewness measures the cubed differences of the data from the mean. The second moment we will see is the variance, and skewness is the third moment. Where s s is the sample standard deviation of the data, X i X i, and x ¯ x ¯ is the arithmetic mean and n n is the sample size.įormally the arithmetic mean is known as the first moment of the distribution. Again looking at the formula for skewness we see that this is a relationship between the mean of the data and the individual observations cubed.Ī 3 = ∑ ( x i − x ¯ ) 3 n s 3 a 3 = ∑ ( x i − x ¯ ) 3 n s 3 The most common exceptions occur in sets of discrete data.Īs with the mean, median and mode, and as we will see shortly, the variance, there are mathematical formulas that give us precise measures of these characteristics of the distribution of the data. It is not, however, true for every data set. This is an important connection between the shape of the distribution and the relationship of the mean and median. In symmetric distributions, we expect the mean and median to be approximately equal in value. When the distribution is skewed to the right, the mean is often greater than the median. Therefore, when the distribution of data is skewed to the left, the mean is often less than the median. The mean is affected by outliers that do not influence the mean. Again, the mean reflects the skewing the most. Of the three statistics, the mean is the largest, while the mode is the smallest. The mean is 7.7, the median is 7.5, and the mode is seven. A positive measure of skewness indicates right skewness such as Figure 2.13. If the skewness is negative then the distribution is skewed left as in Figure 2.12. The greater the deviation from zero indicates a greater degree of skewness. The mathematical formula for skewness is: a 3 = ∑ ( x i − x ¯ ) 3 n s 3 a 3 = ∑ ( x i − x ¯ ) 3 n s 3. ![]() We can formally measure the skewness of a distribution just as we can mathematically measure the center weight of the data or its general "speadness". A distribution of this type is called skewed to the left because it is pulled out to the left. The right-hand side seems "chopped off" compared to the left side. The histogram for the data: 4 5 6 6 6 7 7 7 7 8 shown in Figure 2.11 is not symmetrical. In a symmetrical distribution that has two modes (bimodal), the two modes would be different from the mean and median. This example has one mode (unimodal), and the mode is the same as the mean and median. In a perfectly symmetrical distribution, the mean and the median are the same. The mean, the median, and the mode are each seven for these data. A distribution is symmetrical if a vertical line can be drawn at some point in the histogram such that the shape to the left and the right of the vertical line are mirror images of each other. The histogram displays a symmetrical distribution of data. ![]() In Primordial Bagua, also known as Fu Xi Bagua or Earlier Heaven Bagua, the Heaven is in the higher part and the Earth is in the lower part. The two forms produce four phenomena, named lesser yang, great yang (tai yang also means the Sun), lesser yin, great yin (tai yin also means the Moon). The Taiji produces two forms, named Yin and Yang. The Limitless ( Wuji) produces the delimited, and this is the Absolute ( Taiji). In Change there is the Supreme Polarity, ( 太極 Taiji), There are eight possible combinations to render the various trigrams ( 八卦 bāguà): The ancient Chinese classic, I Ching ( Pinyin: Yi Jing), consists of the 64 pairwise permutations of trigrams, referred to as " hexagrams", along with commentary on each one. The trigrams have correspondences in astronomy, astrology, geography, geomancy, anatomy, the family, martial arts, Chinese medicine and elsewhere. The relationships between the trigrams are represented in two arrangements: the Primordial ( 先天八卦), "Earlier Heaven", or "Fu Xi" bagua ( 伏羲八卦) and the Manifested ( 後天八卦), "Later Heaven", or "King Wen" bagua. The trigrams are related to Taiji philosophy, Taijiquan and the Wuxing, or "five elements". Due to their tripartite structure, they are often referred to as Eight Trigrams in English. Each consists of three lines, each line either "broken" or "unbroken", respectively representing yin or yang. The bagua or pakua (八卦) are a set of eight symbols that originated in China, used in Taoist cosmology to represent the fundamental principles of reality, seen as a range of eight interrelated concepts. In the anime, a minor version of this technique is Eight Trigrams Thirty-Two Palms and the doubled version of this technique is Eight Trigrams One Hundred Twenty-Eight Palms.Bagua diagram explanation from Zhao Huiqian's ( 趙撝謙) Liushu benyi ( 六書本義, 1370s) Bagua Requires the user to approach the opponent at close range, leaving them open to attacks. The attack not only disables the enemy but also knocks them back with every set of strikes. Each set of strikes is done at an exponentially increasing pace and strength. It begins with striking two chakra points, followed by four more, then eight, then sixteen, then thirty-two, and then sixty-four strikes. This jutsu closes off sixty-four specific chakra points on an opponent's body with the Gentle Fist, effectively eliminating their ability to use chakra for quite some time and making it difficult for them to move. ![]() Those searching for the cache then use their own handheld GPS receivers to help them locate the hidden stash. Instead, the person hiding the cache shares the exact longitude and latitude coordinates using a Global Positioning System device. Unlike letterboxing, though, geocaching doesn’t rely on narrative clues to lead participants to the treasure. Like letterboxers, geocachers search for a waterproof container, called a “cache,” that holds a logbook they can sign and date. Geocaching is a much newer activity, invented a little over 10 years ago by Oregonian Dave Ulmer. There are many websites dedicated to providing clues to letterboxes, the most popular of which is Geocaching Some aren’t posted online at all, but only spread through word of mouth. ![]() Some are straightforward, while others require puzzle-solving skills. Over time, letterboxers fill up their books with dozens, or even hundreds, of fun and unique stamps, creating a sense of community and camaraderie with people they may never meet, except on paper.Ĭlues for finding a letterbox are written and posted online by the person who hid it. When they find a letterbox, they sign the logbook and place their own stamp in it, and mark their own book with the stamp from the box. People searching for letterboxes carry their own book and personal stamp. The “box” itself can be any sealed container, such as a water bottle, pill case, or plastic kitchenware. Though they don’t have to be, the stamps are often one-of-a-kind, hand-carved stamps. Today, letterboxes each contain a logbook and a stamp. Today, there are thousands of letterboxes at Dartmoor alone, but the hobby has spread worldwide, in part because of a feature story in Smithsonian Magazine during the late 1990s, and in part because the Internet has made it possible to publish a large number of clues all in one place. Over time, people hid more containers in the moor, and the calling cards were replaced by postcards that would be mailed by the next person to find the box (thus the name, letterboxing). He encouraged visitors to find it and leave behind a calling card to mark their achievement. The sport was invented in 1854, when an outdoorsman named James Perrott hid a glass bottle at Cranmere Pool, an out-of-the-way spot in Dartmoor, a national park in Devon, England. People have engaged in letterboxing for more than 150 years. Here’s a closer look at each hobby, and their similarities and differences. Usually, but not always, the clues can be found in one of several special online forums set up specifically for sharing them. In both, the object is to find a waterproof box hidden in a park or other public location, following clues left by the person who hid it. Letterboxing and geocaching are outdoor hobbies that combine hiking, orienteering, and creative problem solving to lead participants to a hidden “treasure.” If you haven’t completely gotten over your childhood dreams of being an explorer or a pirate in search of buried treasure, you may enjoy one of two hobbies that are gaining in popularity: letterboxing and geocaching. Some grandfathered caches have been rewarded to users as a special gift to the community or created as one-shots for celebrations but they still remain grandfathered. Geocaching HQ lists 16 active cache types and 4 grandfathered cache types at In geocaching "grandfathered" refers to a cache type that is still available to find but not available for creation. |
